La Paz has so many amazing things to offer, but looking back a few years you will not remember all of them. These are things we will remember forever
El Alto Sunday market
We arrived to La Paz early on a Sunday and everything was still closed. We decided to get to El Alto and walk around because we figured we won't have time to do that later. It is easily reachable by the cable car or laboriously by walking up (not recommended). On the top we found a lively market that sells everything you can imagine. Walking around the market got us to feel the locals, as we were the only foreigners there at that time of the day. There are also a few viewpoints around the market that look onto La Paz and the surrounding mountains from a higher ground.
The cable cars
As I mentioned, the cable car is the best way to get to El Alto. But even if you are not planning to get to that altitude, you should try any other line of the cable car and enjoy the view from above. This is probably one of the better cable car systems I saw throughout my travels
Mi Chola
We went out to the area of Sopocachi for it's nightlife. We found many fun bars, clubs and restaurants. Among these restaurants we found, at least what was then, a truly hidden gem. Since our visit more people found this restaurant and at the time of writing of these words it is the #2 rated restaurant in La Paz by TripAdvisor.
The chef is an amazing guy that truly knows his food and is trying to innovate the Bolivian cosine. Back then the menu had 2 options, a 3 course meal or a 5 course meal. We ordered one of each, just to try all the food and it was AMAZING. To top that, for the beer lover in me, they served Bolivian craft beer!
If you have the chance, you definitely should not miss out on this place!
Valle de Las Animas
Being the highest capital city in the world comes with it's perks, La Paz is full of places with high altitude nature. One of these place is Valle de Las Animas. It's special rock formations will make you feel like you are on another planet. You can make a few hikes the canyon, we chose to do the shortest circular hike that takes about 3-4 hours to finish. The canyon is reachable by a microbuses from around the city, a is a must see!
The mountain hikes
Being surrounded by mountains, the main attraction would of course be hiking those mountains. There are many hikes around the city, we were interested mainly in two: El Choro (which we did) and Huyana Potosi (which we want to come back and do). Find your favorite trek and go for it, just be respectful of the altitude!
Final thoughts
As always, this is just the tip of the iceberg. During our time in La Paz we found so many places that we liked, we remember all of that time as a positive experience. But when we think for a second what exactly did we like, the places in this list came in mind. Think about your past travels, what are your memorable moments?
