Ski? Digital nomading? Any other reason that brings you to look at Bansko? Here is all the information you need to enjoy this magical place
First things first - How to get there
If you are flying into Sofia, you will have to ride for about two and a half hours to reach Bansko. You can rent a car at the airport or take a taxi. The most affordable option is to use a shuttle from Traventuria. The shared shuttles operate mainly during the season and they have an option to private and semi-private cars even during offseason. If you are coming alone or with a group of less than 4 people this would be the cheapest way to get to Bansko. They also have shuttles from different parts of Bulgaria.
If you are coming in a bigger group it would be more efficient to go with a private car. The best source of rides would be on one of the Bansko Facebook groups.
You can, of course, drive there on exactly the same road. Which is a friendly and high quality (but narrow) road, even at night!
Where to stay
Bansko is very touristy, there are almost no locals live in the town, most of them live in the towns around. This means that there are plenty of accommodation options. Most of the people aim to be as close as possible to the gondola, but if you are more into the calm experience and don't mind walking a bit, or if you read our post about skiing in Bansko and understand that it doesn't really matter how close you are to the gondola, you should opt in to the cheaper and nicer accommodations in the city center and other parts of the city. Our favorite spot to stay at is Monkey Mountain Lodge.
Where to eat/drink
Bansko is a great source of local Bulgarian cuisine, which will also show you a bit of Bulgarian culture. If you are more into modern or international food, they have plenty of that as well. Take a look at our favorites places to eat at here.
What to do in Bansko in the winter
Winter is the busy season in town, being a ski resort and all. But ski is not the only thing you can do in Bansko in the winter. Take a look at our suggestions of winter activities here.
Skiing in Bansko
As I've mentioned a few times in this post, Bansko is a ski town. It has the largest ski center in the Balkans. With mountains that go as high as 2700m and plenty of skiing routes for beginners and advanced. Read all you need to know about the skiing in Bansko here
Final thoughts
The goal of this post is to get you all the basic information on Bansko so you know what you are getting into. It is not a complete guide and you can always find more specifics (you can even ask us!). Moreover, it is still missing information about the summer season, which I intend to add once I am visiting Bansko in the summer.
