The Nicoya peninsula is far from everything else in Costa Rica, but even here I managed to feed my craft beer hobby. Here are my favorite places
As always I'm snooping around to find the local beers, and even in this far away place, there was just enough beer to tell a story. Hope you enjoy this one like I enjoyed drinking it!
The 2
Let's start from the origin, in the south of the peninsula there are 2 breweries that will serve you their beer. La Selva Cerveza in Cabuya and La Perra Hermosa in Malpais. Unfortunately for me we did not visit any of the two, the first we hitchhiked past, and the second ran out of beer and therefore was closed for the moment we were there. I cannot recommend the places as I haven't visited, but I did manage to try the beers, and they are highly recommended!
The 4
El Castanito - Cabuya
After missing the brewery itself, we decided to just go to the closest restaurant we had to the place we were staying at. And imagine my amazement when I discovered that the same restaurant sells the beer from the brewery I just missed. They even had a chart to help the people who don't want to drink all of the beers decide which ones they do! In addition to that there was some great fish to eat, and the owner was extremely nice and let us try a few pieces of a freshly caught - freshly cut huge tuna.
Burger Rancho
One of our favorite places to hang out in Santa Teresa. Other than serving great food (try the amazing Tuna burger!), they also have some draft craft as well as some bottled. The staff is great and the place is great for an afternoon beer in case you want to avoid the high sun. Definitely shouldn't miss this one!
Kooks Smokehouse and Bar
Technically I can't say I drank beer there, as we arrived as they were closing on New Year's eve (for this reason I also do not have a photo of the place, sorry!). But I thought I should mention it because they did sell beer from the closed La Perra Hermosa brewery, and they were nice enough to get me a pint of it to go even after they closed!
Super Ronny's (drink on the beach)
The supermarket was my absolute favorite, with a wide variety of local craft, and even some imported basics. We got about 25 different craft beers in total out of the store and just went to the beach to chill and drink them every day
Final thoughts
I don't know why I was so surprised to find all of this beer, maybe because I'm used to the usual lack of craft in the Latin American countries, or the lack of craft in secluded locations... But one thing is certain, this surprise was extremely pleasant for me! The beers were great and the adventures to get there were worth to remember.
As always, there are other places to have your beer around the area, these are only the places that I have visited (or passed by). Go out, explore, find your exotic beer, and tell me about it!
