Camino Portugues with a baby - Tui to Porto

Updated: Jun 30

Our goal to walk to Portugal has been reached, now we only needed to get to Porto on time for the plane. Here is how it went

main photo

After the extra touristy last 100km and all the rain, we were hoping for a fresh start in Portugal and a fresh start we got. Like magic, the minute we crossed the border it stopped raining and the rain didn't resume for most of our walk. The camino became less toutisty, and after more than a month on the way we had to switch to English. This part of the camino was friendlier, had donativos again and some other places that embodied the spirit of the camino.

Our journey

Day 12 - Tui - Rubiaes 20km

Day 13 - Rubiaes - Ponte de Lima 17.5km

Day 14 - Ponte de Lima - Igreja 12.2km

Day 15 - Igreja - Portela de Tamel 12.3km

Day 16 - Portela de Tamel - Barcelos 9.4km

Day 17 - Barcelos - San Pedro de Rates 16.7

Day 18 - San Pedro de Rates - Vairao 13.7km

Day 19 - Vairao - Porto 23km

The baby

Our son also had a fresh start. Less clothes, new type of diapers, new foods. He still doesn't crawl but it looks like it is going to happen any time now. Looks like we are finishing the journey just on time. The happiest pilgrim on the camino is still happy!

Highlights

Crossing the border from Spain to Portugal - As I mentioned before, that crossing was magical. The rain instantly stopped, the people instantly changed. Everything felt more relaxed.

Fontoura - The happiest village we encountered on our journey. The church was playing local traditional music all day and you could hear it for kilometers away. We only stopped for a beer, but our mood instantly got better.

Casa Sagres - A small albergue that is run by a family, that also cooks a community dinner every night. Ome of the best places we stayed at

Albergue de S.Pedro Fins - Tamel - A municipal albergue that is run by one of the most amazing people. One of the only places on the Camino Portugués that we managed to make some friends, even though we were walking the other way.

Albergue de peregrinos do mosteiro de Vairao - An old monastery that was turned to an albergue. the place is just amazing, and being the last Albergue on our journey helped cement the magic

Porto - What a great destination to finish a journey. Porto is a beautiful city with a chill vibe. And as it is more frequented than most of the camino, there is even craft beer!

Final thoughts

The Portuguese part of the camino did not disappoint. From Tui until Porto the views were amazing and the people were nice. The weather was also more favorable so our overall enjoyment grew. It was a bit different with the fact that we had a destination and a due date, and the last days felt already less camino-ish, but walking the camino with our baby will be a memory we will cherish for life and the part from Tui to Porto made it's mark on us as well.
