Isla Holbox - All you need to know

Isla Holbox is an island in Quitana Roo that is separated mainland by 10 km of shallow lagoon that is home to flamingos, pelicans and other rich birdlife. How to get there and what to do there? Reat it all here

How to get there

The island is very easy to get to, you can take a bus to Chiquila, and a ferry from there to Isla Holbox. If you let them handle your luggage, be careful with your valuables. I lost some things that fell off while they were throwing my backpack around

Where to stay

There are a lot of options on the island, varying by price levels and type of accommodations. I stayed in the Be Holbox Hostel, and they had available rooms, sold beer, and accepted cards (a rare thing on the island!)

Where to eat (and drink!)

My favorite places were actually the smallest of eateries, that offered food with the secret ingredient of love. Unfortunately a lot of them closed since my last visit, so here are 2 bigger places I liked instead:

  • LUUMA - A high-end restaurant, with their own craft beer. A bit expensive for my taste, but I definitely enjoyed my meal!

  • Pura Vida Sushi Roots Bar - As the name suggests, it has some very nice sushi, and other food as well. The main thing for me was, of course, the craft beer.

What else to do

Walk around - The island is small, so walk on the streets, on the beaches. Take in the beauty, one step at a time

Chill in the shallow water - Other than the birdlife, the shallow water is providing an endless walk in the sea, and some very nice photos for Instagram!

Experience Bioluminescence - If you are lucky to get there in the right season, go and see the amazing beauty of glowing-in-the-dark sea. Be sure to ask the locals where is the best place to see it, and if it is visible this time of the year otherwise you will see yourself wandering around the island not knowing what you are looking for

Final thoughts

To be completely honest, this wasn't a must-visit on my list. I had a few days to spare so I decided to look what all the fuss is about. I was not disappointed, the island is unique and beautiful and although I probably did not enjoy everything that it has to offer I enjoyed my visit a lot. I hope that you have now at least some of the picture, let me know if it helped!
