The main tourist attraction in Dominican Republic is it's gorgeous beaches. But there are so many, how do you choose? Here is what I think you should avoid!
Now let's be honest, there is no such thing like a bad beach, especially in this country. All of them are beautiful, and all of them are sunny. What I refer to as 'worst' in this post is the experience you might get getting to or hanging out on these beaches. Here are my least favorite:
Playa Caleta - La Romana
Even though La Romana is the first place anyone will tell you to visit once you land in the country, and the area is home to some amazing beaches, but the beach in the city La Romana is not one of them. If you read my rant about Uber drivers, La Romana has the worst of these greedy drivers phenomenon. Getting to the beach from the city is an absolute nightmare. And the beach itself is not more special than any other beach in the country. It is dirty, and it is the only place we encountered that people just straightforward come to you and ask you for money (usually they are at least decent enough to offer some service for that). I am definitely not returning there.
Any beach close to a resort in Punta Cana
Although all beaches in Dominican Republic are public, the beaches in Punta Cana are very much oriented towards the hotels. Most of the beaches are set just in front of some all-inclusive hotel, which is good for whoever is staying in that hotel but bad for anyone that is not. All the sitting places are designated to the hotel, and even if you just decide to sit somewhere on the sand there is a chance of someone coming to you and telling you that you cannot sit there. You can also forget about having a beer to chill, as all the bars you will find along the way belong to the hotels, and as they serve only their guests, you can't even buy a drink from them. Add to that the fact that Punta Cana has probably the biggest amount of seaweed in and out of the water, and the vast variety of other places to visit the beach, and you will get the worst beaches in the country. The best examples of this are Playa Arena Blanca and Playa Bavaro. Don't get me wrong, there are good beaches in Punta Cana, it's just that none of them are located in front of a hotel.
Final Thoughts
Like I wrote before, these are the beaches in Dominican Republic I had the worst experiences at. You might not experience the same, but if I had then there is a chance someone else will have as well. If I can help you avoid this then that would be the goal here. Have some similar experiences? Different ones? More place that should be avoided? Tell me!
