Things to do around Luperon

Luperon is a small village in the north of Dominican Republic, and there are plenty of reasons to visit. Here are some!

Luperon is one of our favorite places in Dominican Republic. The village has a bay that is naturally protected from storms and hurricanes, and that is the reason many seafarers are making this village their home for the stormy times every year. A lot of them come back every year, and some of them decide to stay. Which means that you can find a great mixture of culture, some world dishes, and the nicest people on the island! If you are lucky enough to find yourself there, here are some places you might want to visit:

Wendys Bar

A local bar run by a brother and sister from the village. In many way it feels like the heart of the village, there are karaoke nights and parties for special events. There are always plenty of people to get to know and hang out with, and there are many food options around to bring food from. Everyone are super nice and just make you want to come back!

Bucanero

Like I noted before, some of the seafarers decide to stay and make a life in the village. This restaurant is a result of such decision, and is definitely the best place on the island to taste some Polish food. This is a gem for us, missing some real food from central Europe, and might save you the trip to Poland if you are going just for the food.

The North Bar and Eatery

Another place that was created by foreigners falling in love with the village. This time a Canadian chef and his wife, who create the best hamburgers on the island! They also offer a lot of other chef-grade food, and a great atmosphere.

The photo is taken from their menu on Google, as I was too busy eating and forgot to take one of my own.

Playa Grande Luperon

Luperon also has it's own beach. It is reachable by a 5 minute drive or about 30 minutes walk from the village. The beach was in the center of attention at some point but some bad business decisions just left it a less frequented beach with an abandoned hotel in the middle of it. The beach is visited by the village visitors, but is still very calm. If you like peace and quiet on the beach, this is your place. Just bring your own beer!

Fricolandia

A short 20 minutes drive out of the village you will find a very beautiful beach facility, with a beach with some cave pools and some outdoor pools as well. There are food and drink options inside and plenty of places to just chill. The entrance is paid and the price is changing depending on the seasons. People usually come for the whole day, so make sure you reserve a place if you want to be hanging out in one of the bungalows.

La Isabela

About 30 minutes ride from the village you can find an archeological museum. This place is the first place where Colombus set foot on his way to discover Latin America, and was the first town made by Europeans in the area. Today, of course, the town is only ruins. But it does hold a lot of history, and still is being discovered by archeologists. The entrance fee to the museum is 150 Peso per person which includes a guide for about an hour, and there is a small souvenir shop in case you want something to remember the place by.

Final thoughts

We discovered this place by chance, but we are so glad that we did. It has become one of our favorite places in the country and we are gladly returning every time. If you are traveling by boat, take your time to visit by sea, and if you are traveling by land stop by with your car, you will definitely not regret it!
