The capital of Mexico and one of the largest cities in the world, also happens to be one of my favorites. Here are things that I like to do every time I visit
Food
You will see this in every one of my posts, and probably everyone's posts, the food in Mexico is great! Every place you go to in the country has their own flavors, and Mexico City, as the capital, has a very good mix of all of those flavors from around the country. Whether you want to try tacos, birria, mole or fish, you can find all of that anywhere. I do not have favorites for this city just because there are too many to choose from. Just go out and try everything, and the farther you will go from the touristic centers, the better
Las Trajineras
Trajineras in Xochimilco is one of those experiences you just have to go through. There are 20 people party on a colorful boat equipped with food, drinks and even live, mariachi music. Or, if you come prepared like we did, you will have the same boat but having only 6 people, with your own drinks for a much lower price. The mariachis are still going around the river in their own boats so you can have them playing for you as well. There are also food boats along the way and some places to stop and see, depending on how much time you rented the boat for.
Craft beer
Like many other Latin-American countries, Mexico is not famous for it's beer (although many of us had a Corona beer at least once in our life). In recent years there was a fast growth in the craft beer culture, and you can see more and more places that make their own beer or sell local craft. Here, unlike with the food, I have clear favorites:
El Bebedero - Located in the southern part own the city, inside a vibrant market full of food shops and other treasures, located a beer shop with a vast selection of beers, and staff that actually knows what they are talking about. I spent there a few drunken hours and have only good things to say about the whole place.
Santuario de La Cerveza - A small shop in a small mall located north of the touristic center, has a great selection of Mexican craft beer and an owner that will be happy to share his knowledge of it. The shop itself has 2-3 tables, one of which we occupied when we were there, but I couldn't resist and bought me some beers to go
Markets
One of my favorite things to do when I travel is to go to markets. Usually you will get cheaper food there, and you will have many options for souvenirs (my poison is magnets, which my mother fridge is full of). The markets in Mexico City are extra special because they are huge and they offer a variety of stuff to look at, I could easily spend hours in each of the markets of the city, but I do have favorites:
La ciudadela - One of the biggest markets (over 200 stalls), that sells mainly hand crafted items and souvenirs. There are also, of course, stalls that sell food and mezcal.
Mercado de San Juan - A smaller market that sells food and a lot of meat, but the special thing about it is that they sell any kind of meat. From the smaller and more famous fried chapulines, to spiders and scorpions, to even crocodile meat and lion hamburgers. We came for the chapulines, but we stayed to wonder about the meaning of life.
Walk around the city
Yes, the city is huge, and some parts of it are not friendly to walk. But it is also full of culture and many hidden and less hidden gems. From Amazing taco stands to great museums and palaces, you can find everything. So whether you do it on a free tour, a paid tour, or just by yourself, just walk. Because there is no better way to get to know a place than with your feet.
Day trip to Teotihuacan
If you are tired of the city or you are visiting Mexico for the ancient ruins, you are in luck. A bit over an hour (by bus) from the northern bus terminal, lies one of the biggest and most significant pre-Columbian cities. It began as a religious center and became one of the biggest cities of that era. Today the site shows well preserved pyramids and some residential compounds from that era. There are guides you can hire when you reach the place or you can walk around like I did, enjoy the view, and read the history from the cards in front of each monument. There is also a very nice restaurant in case you feel like having lunch.
Final thoughts
Mexico city is one of the biggest cities in the world. What is presented in this post is not even the tip of the iceberg of what the city has to offer, these are merely the things that I liked when I visited. The best advice I can give you is just to go and explore, and find more places and things to do in Mexico City! I hope my list helped you somehow. If it did, tell your friends, and if it didn't, tell me why!
